The Kaltene Nature Trail is located on the western coast of the Gulf of Riga in Kaltene, Talsi Municipality. The approximately 1.6 km trail follows the seashore through coastal reed beds and grasslands, offering an opportunity to explore the rocky coastline and its natural diversity.
At the end of the trail stands a birdwatching tower with two observation platforms at different heights. Additional observation platforms are located along the trail, providing views of coastal and water birds. The area is particularly suitable for birdwatching during the spring and autumn migration periods, when a wide variety of geese, waders and other migratory birds can be observed. A bird identification guide is also available at the tower.
The Kaltene coast is also significant from a geological and geomorphological perspective. It forms part of the protected natural monument “Kaltene Coastal Formations”, known for its boulder-covered shoreline and sediments dating from the Littorina Sea period. The coast is also home to Grīļu Boulder, one of the largest coastal boulders in Latvia.
The trail is suitable for walking and nature observation throughout the year. It can be wet after rainfall. A small car park and an outdoor dry toilet are available near the trail.
